Link exchange

Exchanging links with other sites, especially sites similar to your own is a great way to generate traffic. Not only will the links themselves provide traffic, but having a high number of sites linking to you should help your site get better rankings in search engine results. And that means more traffic as well.

More information on the topic of "link exchange" can be found on Wikipedia.

Traffic exchanges

Traffic exchanges have you visit websites, and in exchange other members of the exchange will visit your website. They typically work like this: When you visit sites through the exchange you earn credits. You exchange those credits for visits to your site.

They are a cheap alternative to advertise and attract traffic to a website, requiring a low to no advertising budget.

Traffic

Attracting visitors and/or users is probably the hardest part of making a successful website. It's absolutely essential in order to make money on a website. More users translates to more income.

There are several methods you can use to attack visitors to your site. I'll discuss some of them in future posts.

Bookstore

I've set up an astore (powered by Amazon) with books that are relevant. If you're serious about making money online, you may check it out.

myLot

Here's something different: myLot.com is a community that claims to pay it's users for their activity. I've signed up to check it out.

Initial thoughts
I think the effort to payout ratio is a bit too steep for this to be considered a serious online money making opportunity. It might take something like 800 posts to earn $10 (yet to be confirmed). They do offer to pay via PayPal, which is nice.

Disposable email address

I recommend you get a "disposable email address" through one of the many free email providers out there (hotmail, gmail, etc.). Use it when you sign up for programs and services that you don't fully trust (forexample the ones mentioned in "under testing" and "not recommended").

If you start getting a lot of spam or other unwanted messages in your disposable account, simply close it. Make sure you make a new disposable account first, and update your contact information for any services and programs you'd like to keep.

If you want better control over which services the unwanted mails originated from you can make a unique email address for each service you sign up to. You can do this by using the service name and a random number as the username part of the email address (for example servicename131@hotmail.com).

Also, be selective when it comes to what other personal information you decide to share. Try to foresee how the information can be used, or abused.

Google AdSense

If you have a website I strongly suggest you sign up for Google's AdSense program. It's definitely one of the best options out there.

Pros:
- free (no fees)
- reputable company
- transfers to you checking account (in several countries)
- targeted ads (the ads will match the content of your site)

Cons:
- minimum payout is $100 (could take a while to reach for a new site)

To sign up for AdSense use the button in the sidebar (to the right and close to the top).

Making money online

There are a few different ways you can make money online. Traditional business usually involves selling one or more products and/or services. You can do this on the Internet too, and many products and services are well suited to this. I will discuss how to set up an online shop in future posts.

However, the main focus of this blog will be on how you can make money without any products. To do this you'll need a website. In essence the key to success is to get a lot of users and readers, and in order to do that you'll need a high quality website with high quality content.

Website
This used to be the hard part for most people. In the not so distant past you'd have to master HTML, and other web technologies in order to create a good looking site. Today there's a lot of tools that help you create good and professional looking websites in minutes.

If you don't have much webmaster experience I suggest you start with one of the free blog services out there like wordpress.com or blogger.com.

Payment and money transfer services

One of first things you might need if you want to make money online is some sort of account (in order to get paid). Now, some of the better programs out there do offer to mail you a check, or make deposits to your checking account. This works well if you are a US resident/citizen, if not it might pose a problem.

Luckily there are some nice alternatives out there where the funds are transfered to you electronically. This could be a nice alternative for Americans as well (instead of risking checks lost in the mail, etc.). Here are some good ones:

PayPal
e-gold
Moneybookers
Neteller

Anyways, they're all free to sign up for. So, go right ahead and sign up for several of them if you'd like. They all have their own strengths and weaknesses, features and terms of service (more about this in a future post), so having more than one of them could prove beneficial.

Also, they all have their own referral programs, which I'll assume work. That means you can start making money by reffering users to them.

Welcome

Hi there, and welcome to emoney101.blogspot.com!

About this blog
First of all, the name of this blog might be a bit misleading (However, as this blog progresses, I learn more, and gain more experience that might change). I am no expert when it comes to making money online. I've set up this blog in order to play, research and experiment a little with various online money making opportunities, payment systems online banking, and related topics. I want try out first hand what works, what could work and what doesn't work. I'll use this blog to report on lessons learned, tips & tricks, and offer some friendly advice.

Making money online - the reality?
There's no shortage of blogs and other sites offering "experts" advice on how to make money online, quit your day job and work from home. Now, I assume some really are experts, but more than likely many (most?) are just a waste of time (and money). In any case these sites tend to be so loaded with marketing hype and "mumbo jumbo" that I, personally struggle to get trough even a single paragraph. Also, they usually charge you for sharing their "secrets". And they tend to make it out to be awefully easy to make a s**t load of money. Hmm, makes me very weary indeed.

Important
This blog is mostly aimed at the beginners out there. I hope to provide you with useful information, in order to help you to sign up for good programs and services that actually pays, and stay away from scams. I'll clearly mark serious and legit programs and services as "recommended". The less serious progams and services (scams, questionable TOS, etc.), and programs and services I'm testing/reviewing will also be marked as "not recommended" and "under testing" respectively. And I'll offer some tips on how to sign for those in order to minimize your risk and exposure.

How to help
I do need you (at least some of you) to sign up for the programs and services discussed (through the links provided on this site) in order for me to verify that they work. You should sign up for the programs and services you find interesting, and you think you'll actually use. I'd be delighted to hear about your experiences with the progams and services discussed. I also welcome any feedback concerning this site, please leave a comment!
